Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he’s “very sad” that Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson is selling his team in the wake of workplace misconduct allegations, including claims of sexual harassment.

“Jerry is one of the really, really, really outstanding men of football that I’ve ever met, and I really admire him,” Jones told reporters Sunday night after the Cowboys’ 20-17 win over the Oakland Raiders. “I know that he made it the old-fashioned way. He worked for it. He took what he made in a short time in pro football and turned it into a great business and then used that to get the Carolina franchise. So he’s a great story.”

Richardson, 81, announced Sunday night that he will put the team up for sale at the end of the season. Earlier in the day, Sports Illustratedreported that at least four former Panthers employees have received monetary settlements — and accompanying non-disclosure agreements — from Richardson over the years.

According to the magazine, Richardson has been accused of sexually inappropriate language and behavior, including grazing female employees’ breasts while fastening their seatbelts on lunch outings and commenting on their backsides on Fridays, when employees were permitted to wear jeans. Richardson also allegedly directed a racial slur at an African-American scout who is no longer with the team, according to Sports Illustrated.

“I’m saddened by any of the stories or things that might have incited this at this time,” Jones said of the allegations. “(Richardson) is a battler. He’s a big man with a big heart.

“But I’m really sad. I want all of those kind of men that we can have in the National Football League.”

The Panthers announced Friday that they had opened an investigation into Richardson’s workplace conduct, and NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy confirmed Sunday morning that the NFL had taken control of the investigation. McCarthy told USA TODAY Sports that the league had no comment when reached Sunday night after the announcement that Richardson will sell the team.
