LOS ANGELES, March 29 (UPI) —Big Sean and Jhené Aiko are teaming up on the new project Twenty88.
The 28-year-old rapper and 28-year-old singer teased the collaboration on social media this week before confirming they will release an album together April 1.
“[The album] tells the story of the highs and lows of a relationship, with insights into conflict, memories, love, sex and more and features production from Key Wayne, Detail and Tommy Brown,” Def Jam said in a press release.
Big Sean and Aiko shared video clips and the album cover online and detailed the project in an interview with Flaunt magazine. The duo were inspired by the idea of “the man and woman duet” and drew influences from ’90s R&B and ’70s experimental rock/soul.
“It gets turned up, then it gets melodic, then it gets vibed out,” Big Sean revealed. “It touches all these things, but it sounds very cohesive.”
“We’re in a place where we’re both established, and we’ve laid a lot of groundwork, and it’s really taking it back to just having fun with it. I have fun with her. She’s one of my favorite people to just be around and kick it with.”
Big Sean and Aiko met in 2012 and previously collaborated on such songs as “I Know,” which appeared on the rapper’s album Dark Sky Paradise. Their first music video as Twenty88 will see them play ’70s-inspired adult film characters.
“We’ve created another world,” Aiko said. “Both me and Sean are super into fantasy-driven movies and so combining stuff like robots and sex, that pretty much sums us up … We’ve created these characters that are extensions of ourselves.”
Big Sean last released Dark Sky Paradise in 2015, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and includes the singles “I Don’t [Expletive] With You” and “Paradise.” Aiko released her debut studio album, Souled Out, in 2014.
