KOLKATA, India, March 31 (UPI) — Rescue workers are frantically trying to locate at least 150 people trapped after a bridge collapsed in eastern Indian city of Kolkata.
At least 10 people were killed and many others injured when an overpass under construction collapsed in the city formerly known as Calcutta.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion and then a crash of twisted steel and concrete. Images from the scene show local residents trying to help in the rescue efforts. A fire was sparked by spilled fuel.
The Vivekananda Road flyover is a Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority construction project which was nearing completion. It was intended to move vehicles and pedestrians through the congested business district in Burrabazar-Posta.
The flyover has been under construction since 2009.
