“Our futures look bright. I can see it in our children’s eyes. I’ve never been more optimistic of our city’s diverse, and positive future”

O
n the 2nd of March, 2017, City of Las Vegas Park Commissioner David Lopez participated in the annual program entitled ‘Nevada Reading Week’, where local officials, business owners, and local personalities devote their time to read books to local students. This year, Commissioner Lopez joined with students from Crestwood Elementary School, his mother, assistant, and his former 5th grade teacher Kimberly Fundaro who once taught David at Crestwood. The event lasted about an hour starting at 10:30 am.

Commissioner David Lopez read  ‘Curious George Goes to the Hospital’ and ‘Are You My Mother’  to approximately 45-50 students. He highlighted the importance of early childhood education and career choices. He explained the benefits of reading comprehension, reading analysis, and reasons why students should adopt reading comprehension as early as possible to advance their academic careers.

Undoubtedly, both students, teachers, and participants enjoyed the reading session

Undoubtedly, both students, teachers, and participants enjoyed the reading session. Towards the end of the session, students were able to ask Commissioner Lopez several questions in regards to the importance of reading comprehension and early education.

“Education is very important. You will need to read, being able to analyze utility bills, interpret data, and follow directions. These are very important life skills that will affect everyone equally. The earlier you learn to comprehend, the faster you’ll be able to apply those skills in your life.” Mr. Lopez said at a prior interview at Vegas Newspaper’s studio.

It is never too early to commence the education process for your children. Of course, you won’t start explaining complex ideas and problems to a toddler. Each piece of information has its own place and appropriate time in the development of a child. However, if you invest time into developing the cognitive, intellectual, social, and emotional skills for your child today, you won’t regret it later.   Your child will be ahead of the game and will be able to grow into a successful and well-prepared adult. Students will know how to make the best decisions, read and interpret what’s placed before them, and will be fully capable of communicating and recognizing different feelings and situations all before they enter the 2nd or 3rd grade.

In-a-nutshell, the quickly developing mind of any child is hungry for knowledge, ideas, and learning experience.  Any opportunity that a child has to learn, read, and absorb, is an opportunity that cannot be wasted.  Commissioner Lopez can relate to early onset education as his father exposed him to ‘phonics,’ a reading system that taught Mr. Lopez how to read words by correlating sounds and letters together in the alphabetic writing system.

When Should I Start Early Education for My Child

All parents should remember that children learn through games, mental exercises, and play.   All parents of any elementary student has good intentions and would like to teach their child any way possible at a young age, however all parents must take into account that children often have short attention spans.  Parents must add flavor, fun, and some excitement to any teaching style.  This style will greatly assist any parent in teaching their children the best ways to read and learn.

Just a few minutes per day consisting of an educational activity is more than enough in helping your child develop into a smart and successful adult. Timing is everything! David knows a thing or two about education.  In addition to serving as a local park representative, he’s also an after school instructor employed by the city of Las Vegas.  He takes time to explain homework, play games, features the fruit of the week, and more.

Every student K-12 can have a bright future, but parents, teachers, and educational systems must provide the opportunity to successfully teach all students early on.

In a busy city like Las Vegas, many parents often have busy and successful careers, and feel there’s not sufficient time to invest in the early education of their children. However, this doesn’t mean that every teaching opportunity is lost. Las Vegas has several early education centers that will be more than happy to give your child a proper start in life. Such as the programs Mr. Lopez is involved in with the city. Every student K-12 can have a bright future, but parents, teachers, and educational systems must provide the opportunity to successfully teach all students early on.

What if my child is too young?

There’s no such thing as a child that’s too young to learn. Children with time, learn to walk, fall properly, and speak. Once they get older there’s computer books, games, and activities designed for each age group, provided the basic notions and information that are appropriate for each developmental stage of every child.

In addition, parents need to realize that early education is not meant to deny children of enjoying a beautiful and happy childhood, but simply a way to make sure that the child will acquire abundant knowledge that will allow him or her to reach success as early as conceivably possible

Conclusion

Every parental dream is seeing their children succeeding and accomplishing their own individual goals and ambitions. Mr. Lopez knows this. This is why over the last few years, he has prided himself over inspiring young minds to succeed and learn early. “Everyone can succeed at anything they want to. “They don’t have to pursue politics the way I did. I pursued it because it came from my heart” “My advice consists of finding a passion, educating oneself, and run with that passion. No matter who you are, what you earn, or what career path you take, if it comes from the heart, you will be the BEST at it” Commissioner Lopez said. Education is indeed the key to anyone’s future. “Our futures look bright. I can see it in our children’s eyes. I’ve never been more optimistic of our city’s diverse, and positive future” Mr. Lopez said.

A lifetime is not enough to learn everything. Who can? Mr. Lopez has emphasized that the earlier the education, the better. Learning today, will allow for more time in order to learn and read tomorrow.
